Victim Services of Durham Region presents
Youth Violence Prevention Symposium
Join us in Empowering and engaging Youth to stay safe!
Register TodaySince 2020, our school-based Violence Prevention Symposium for Grades 7, 8 and 9 has been held annually in February. Initially focusing on Anti-Human Trafficking, the Symposium has now expanded to meet the needs of youth based on trends that we are seeing.
Our aim is to protect and empower young people by providing engaging education on issues related to human trafficking, consent, healthy relationships, sextortion, teen dating violence, gang awareness, cyber safety and more. Youth will learn about vulnerabilities and risk factors through a series of activities and presentations. Guest speakers have included spoken word artists, survivor stories, Indigenous knowledge keepers, and more. Our goal is to equip youth with the critical knowledge and tools they need to support them in navigating the complex realities that come with being a young person, especially in today’s rapidly changing online world. In doing so, we will simultaneously be working to reduce youth experiences of violence and exploitation.
In partnership with Schools and Educators this interactive event will engage youth using online modules, games and videos to enhance learning in a safe setting. Youth will also be provided with information on where to seek support both on the day of the event, as well as in future.
Youth knowledge has increased from 35 – 97% as a result of our prevention programming and the number of youth educated has increased by over 300% since our first symposium in 2020. In 2023 Victim Services of Durham Region received 48 disclosures as a result of education provided during the symposium.
