Become A Volunteer

Victim Crisis Responder

Volunteer Crisis Responders are provided with ongoing and comprehensive training to provide the best possible crisis assistance. Candidates must meet the following minimum requirements and successfully complete our mandatory training to become part of the Victim Response Team.

The minimum requirements are as follows:

Minimum of 21 years of age at the time of recruitment
Must reside within Durham Region
Consent to a Police Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Person Sector Check
Must possess a valid class “G” license and insurance
Access to a reliable vehicle
Able to commit to one year of service
Demonstrated ability to cope in stressful or crisis situations
Effective communications skill
Respect for confidentiality and personal beliefs
Provide 2-3 twelve hour shifts per month
Team of two volunteers is supported by a volunteer Team Leader who is on call 24-7 to receive police request for on-scene and telephone support.

Primary role of a Volunteer Victim Crisis Responder is to provide:

Trauma-informed support
“Frontline” crisis response
Needs assessment
Short term emotional stabilization
Practical assistance
Distribution of information and referrals
On-scene or via telephone crisis response
Suggest appropriate options when victims are often unable to make sound decisions
Guidance and options to navigate system
